OUR MATARIKI FESTIVAL
During the month of June, events and activities have been organised for all ages to celebrate and share Matariki. Most of these events are FREE to join, with some involving a small koha towards resources.
Thanks to Orakei Local Board, Press Go (Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand) and Pandora Hawke for their support of the Matariki Festival.

Sunday 9 and 16 June, 4.00-6.00pm
A two-part film viewing to understand Te Tiriti O Waitangi from a Christian perspective. Māori and non-Māori experts will help us understand what the Treaty of Waitangi says, the context in which the Treaty was signed and the role Christians played, and what’s the story now? FREE
Explore the art and story of Rewana bread.

Join Pandora Hawke and Pip to explore the art/craft of Rewana breadmaking while Pandy shares stores if her childhood and Rewana breadmaking with her Kuia. KOHA $10

Friday 14 June, 5.00–6.30pm
Join our intergenerational community dinner to share and celebrate Matariki through story, waiata and kai. KOHA $10 per family.
Creative Matariki children’s art workshop, Saturday 15 June, 1–3 pm
Join Ruth from Creative Rumi to explore Matariki through art. Suitable for children age 5 – 11 years. KOHA $10 per child.
Deeper understanding of Pepeha Workshop – an indigenous code.
Tuesday 18 June, 6.30–8.30pm
Join us to explore the Pepeha. Pandora Hawke (Te Atihaunui-a-paparangi, Ngāti Tama, Nga Rauru, Ngāti Porou) will lead this workshop explaining what a pepeha is and how our identity is important in getting it right. We will start this workshop with soup and rolls from 6 pm. FREE
Matariki Kids’ Event.
Friday 21 June. 4.00-6.30pm
An afternoon of fun arts and crafts for children to explore and celebrate Matariki, followed by Starlight Storytime where Pandora Hawke will share the stories of Matariki. This will be followed by cookies and milo and waiata in the community lounge. FREE
Waiata singalong.
Friday 21 June, 6.00-7.00pm
Join our waiata singalong on Friday 21 June from 6 – 7 pm. Bring your ukulele or guitar (if you have one) and join us Matariki celebration.
